Thursday, January 15, 2026
2pm ET / 1pm CT / 12pm MT / 11am PT
Speakers
-Jeff Burrow, National Healthcare Director, Pocketalk
-Katy Jao, Head of Marketing, Pocketalk
Clear communication is essential for equitable care, but for the approximately 25 million Americans with limited English proficiency (LEP), language remains a major barrier to safety and quality in healthcare. Though hospitals have improved clinical translation, most language access programs stop at the exam room door. Non-clinical staff—including reception and food services—often lack the tools to communicate effectively, causing daily friction
and, at times, safety risks.
This session explores a holistic approach to language access, combining human interpretation with secure tools like Pocketalk to bridge communication gaps across the entire patient journey. Attendees will learn where current systems fall short and how leading health systems are integrating technology to extend language access beyond clinical conversations. The discussion will outline key considerations: privacy, accuracy, and usability for adopting translation solutions that uphold both compliance and compassion, ensuring every interaction supports safe, equitable, and human-centered care.
Learning Objectives
-Identify gaps in current healthcare language access programs beyond the clinical encounter.
-Articulate at least two risks related to patient safety and regulatory compliance associated with inadequate language access for non-clinical staff.
-Evaluate translation solutions based on four key considerations: privacy, accuracy, usability, and alignment with organizational compliance standards.
-Describe one actionable strategy to extend language access beyond clinical interactions within their own organization, applying a holistic language access approach.
